Others say they’re just as expensive as weddings back home.
Most avoid specifics altogether.

The truth is: it depends — but not in the vague way people usually mean.

After documenting weddings across resorts and private venues in Riviera Maya, and after planning our own destination wedding here, we’ve learned that the real cost isn’t just about numbers. It’s about where money actually goes, what couples don’t expect, and how clarity (or lack of it) affects the experience.

A Real Example: Our Own Wedding in Riviera Maya

We got married on February 25th, 2023, after planning for about 18 months.

Because we had guests coming from 10 different countries, we wanted to give everyone enough time to plan and travel. The first thing we did was set the date and book the venue — the date was easy, since it was also our 10-year anniversary.

    8 waiters + 3 bartenders

Food was one of the areas we were happiest we invested in — it had a huge impact on the guest experience.

Rentals & Production

  • ~$5,000 USD

  • Tables, chairs, lighting, sound, and general event infrastructure

Planner

  • We were lucky here.

  • Our planner is a close friend, so we only covered the staff costs, not her full planning fee.

We took the time to research and intentionally choose someone whose work we truly loved — and now, the video is one of my favorite things we have from the day.

That was a big lesson for me.

Entertainment

  • DJ: ~$1,200 USD

  • Mariachi band (8 people at midnight): ~$400 USD

  • Taco cart (late night): ~$300 USD

This combination created the exact atmosphere we wanted — a relaxed Mexican beach party.

Flowers & Decor

  • ~$3,000 USD

Simple, intentional, and aligned with the setting.

Legal & Unexpected Costs

  • Rain backup plan (tent): $4,000 USD minimum — we chose not to hire it

  • Additional service charges for vendor delivery to a private beach venue

One of the biggest surprises was delivery and service fees. Because the venue is private and beachfront, vendors had to arrive early and transport equipment over longer distances — and that came with extra costs we hadn’t initially accounted for.

What Surprised Us the Most

The biggest surprise wasn’t the total number — it was how many small costs add up quickly:
