Dolores and Jordan flew in from Texas with around 65 guests for a December wedding that started exactly when the Riviera Maya light is at its best — 5pm, an hour before sunset, with everything getting warmer and more golden by the minute.
They chose Blue Venado for the simplest reason: they wanted to party until 1am without a resort cutting the night short. What they got was that, and a lot more they hadn't fully anticipated.
The ceremony was Mayan — copal incense, the four directions ritual, rope binding, flower petals and fruit and nuts laid at the base of the altar — and it lasted around 45 minutes. These ceremonies move differently than a standard western ceremony. The officiant works through the space, the couple moves, the energy shifts. You have to move with it. By the time the final blessing came around, the sunset had arrived with it. The copal smoke was still rising off the altar, the guests had closed in around the couple, and the light was doing something specific to everything it touched — that thick, amber, end-of-day Caribbean light that makes you feel like you're inside a painting.
Then the petals came. Red petals, showered over both of them, catching the smoke and the light on the way down. It's one of those moments that a photographer doesn't engineer — you just have to be in the right position and let it happen. I was.
The reception moved inside the palapa — long harvest tables, gold-rimmed bamboo chairs, red and blush florals running the length of the table, candles burning low. The party ran until 1am, which at Blue Venado isn't an exception. It's the point
