Caitrin & RJ’s wedding at Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres was the perfect blend of modern design and relaxed luxury — a true reflection of who they are. Both pilots, expert travelers, and world explorers, they brought an effortless sense of adventure to their day.
When we received their first email, we were thrilled at the chance to photograph a wedding at this new resort in Costa Mujeres. We’d already worked at other Secrets properties across Mexico and knew the level of quality, service, and experience this brand delivers. Secrets Playa Blanca lived up to every expectation — and then some.
A Destination Wedding at Secrets Playa Blanca in Costa Mujeres
Secrets Playa Blanca immediately impressed us with its attention to detail — curated design, lush gardens, and contemporary architecture. Nestled along the white-sand coastline of Costa Mujeres, just north of Cancún, the resort offers calm seclusion and elevated style.
Caitrin & RJ chose this resort for its privacy and peaceful atmosphere. The adults-only setting made it ideal for a modern, elegant celebration surrounded by friends and family. The property itself is a dream to photograph — from the clean architectural lines of the lobby to the vibrant gardens and natural tones of white, grey, brown, and green that flow throughout the resort.
Getting Ready at the Spa & Resort Suites
We began with Caitrin’s getting-ready photos in the bridal suite at the spa. The space was bright and spacious, flooded with soft natural light from large windows and surrounded by floor-to-ceiling mirrors — perfect for capturing those quiet pre-ceremony moments.
We photographed all the details she carefully brought with her: invitation suite, jewelry, shoes, and the gown itself.
Meanwhile, Walter, my second shooter, joined RJ for his getting-ready session. He captured the groom’s details — suit, watch, shoes, fragrance — followed by candid moments as the groomsmen helped with final touches. RJ’s portraits by the pool area set an elegant tone before the day unfolded.
The First Look in Front of the Spa
We chose the area in front of the spa for the first look — shaded, private, and framed by striking modern architecture.
The energy was beautiful: excitement, emotion, and genuine connection. Caitrin & RJ read their vows to each other in private, taking a few quiet minutes before the celebration began.
We always recommend first looks because they help couples slow down, release the nerves, and truly enjoy their wedding day. It’s a private, intimate moment that becomes one of the most meaningful memories to look back on.
The Terrace Ceremony
Their ceremony took place on a wood-deck terrace overlooking the ocean, framed by two lush greenery columns with monstera leaves. The design felt fresh, minimal, and perfectly in tune with the beach surroundings.
The timing — exactly one hour before sunset — gave us soft, golden light throughout the ceremony, creating the ideal conditions for timeless photographs.
Reception Under the Stars
The reception setup was absolutely stunning. Under a canopy of string lights and flowers, guests dined and danced by the ocean. For their first dance, Caitrin & RJ added a magical touch — sparklers that lit up the night.
Their families and friends gave heartfelt speeches before the dance floor officially opened, and from there, the party never stopped. It was a night full of joy, laughter, and celebration.

Why did you choose Secrets Playa Blanca for your wedding?
We chose Secrets Playa Blanca for a couple of reasons. We loved that it was a bit more secluded than some of the other Cancún resorts, which gave it a calm and quiet atmosphere that really resonated with us. We also loved how new and beautiful everything was — every ceremony and reception space we toured was absolutely gorgeous.
Tips for couples getting married in Cancún?
If it’s within your budget, hire a wedding planner or a day-of coordinator. It’s less about Cancún specifically and more general advice, but it makes a huge difference at a destination wedding. We would have struggled to coordinate everything without the help of our planner.
What was your favorite part of your wedding day?
The first look! After all the buildup and nerves, seeing each other for the first time that day was incredibly emotional. Having a private moment together — followed by some wonderful photos — really helped settle our nerves and let us be present for the rest of the day.
How was your experience working with Luke Fotoliv Photography?
Our experience working with Luke and Walter was incredible. We spoke with Luke several times before the wedding, so by the time we arrived in Cancún, it felt like we already knew him. He was receptive to what we wanted while still bringing his own artistic vision, which was so helpful. You can tell he’s genuinely inspired by his work — and it shows in every photo. We absolutely love our images.
