Cancún wedding photographer

Documentary wedding photography across the Cancún area. 500+ weddings shot since 2014.

Cancún isn't one place. It's a city with three very different wedding zones — the Hotel Zone along the lagoon, Playa Mujeres and Costa Mujeres to the north, and the smaller resort pockets in between. We've photographed 500+ weddings across all of them and know which resorts, which ceremony spots, and which times of day photograph best in each one.

Whether you're planning a big Hindu celebration at Garza Blanca Cancún, an intimate adults-only wedding at Atelier Playa Mujeres, or a rooftop reception at Dreams Vista, we bring the same approach: documentary coverage, real moments, timeless storytelling.

Why couples choose us for their Cancún wedding

We know your resort.

By the time you tell us the venue, we've usually shot there five or ten times. We know where the light is best at 4pm, which backgrounds actually photograph, and where the wedding coordinator will want us during the ceremony.

We shoot real moments.

Documentary means we don't stage. Your mom's face when you walk down the aisle. The moment your best friend loses it during the toast. Your dad's hand on your shoulder before the first look. That's the work.

We work with a second shooter.

Walter joins me on every full-day wedding, which means simultaneous coverage — getting-ready in both rooms, guest reactions during the ceremony, wide and close angles at the reception.

We shoot digital and 35mm film.

Every wedding is covered on digital. For couples who want it, we also shoot 5 rolls of 35mm film per wedding — Kodak Portra 400 and black and white — for intimate portraits and quiet moments. You can see the film work at lukefotoliv.com/film-photography.

Cancún Wedding Zones — a quick orientation

Cancún is one city with three distinct wedding areas, and most couples mix them up before they book. Here's how they actually break down.

Cancún Hotel Zone

The Hotel Zone is the long strip running along the lagoon and the Caribbean, between downtown and the airport. It's what most people picture when they think "Cancún" — big resorts, wide beaches, and that saturated turquoise water sitting behind you in every photo. Fifteen minutes from the airport, which is why it's still the most-booked zone for destination weddings. We've photographed weddings across most of the major properties here, including Fiesta Americana Condesa, Presidente InterContinental, Nizuc Resort & Spa, Krystal Cancún, Hyatt Ziva, Live Aqua Cancún, Kempinski, and Moon Palace, plus private venues like Ilios Restaurant.

Playa Mujeres & Costa Mujeres

Playa Mujeres and Costa Mujeres sit on the north side of the city, opposite the Hotel Zone. Same municipality, completely different feel: newer luxury resorts, quieter beaches, more upscale, with a strong lineup of adults-only options. Plan on 40–50 minutes from the airport by pre-arranged transfer. Resorts we've photographed weddings at in this zone include Atelier Playa Mujeres, Finest Playa Mujeres, TRS Coral Costa Mujeres, Dreams Playa Mujeres, Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres, Garza Blanca Cancún, Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres, and Majestic Elegance Costa Mujeres.

Puerto Juárez (between the two)

Puerto Juárez is the in-between zone — north of the Hotel Zone but before you reach Playa Mujeres. The standout here is Dreams Vista Cancún, a 17-story resort with one of the best rooftop reception venues in the entire city.

Cancún Wedding Venues We Recommend

These are the resorts we know best, where we've shot enough weddings to have real opinions about the light, the ceremony spots, the reception venues, and how the day tends to flow.

Atelier Playa Mujeres

Our top pick

Atelier Playa Mujeres is our top pick when a couple wants the highest-end resort in the area. It's adults-only, hosts only one wedding per day (rare in Cancún), and the architecture stands apart from every other resort here. The convention center is a giant glass box built around a botanical garden, which gives us stunning natural light for first looks. We've shot ceremonies on the beach, at Don Fernando's, in the chapel, and at Limón & Sal, with receptions at Limón & Sal for a lush jungle feel or at La Punta Deck for a beach setting. For cocktail hour, El Cielo and its elevated view is the one we come back to.

Bride and groom portrait in the lobby at Grand Palladium during Trs Coral wedding in Costa Mujeres Cancún.

Trs coral Costa Mujeres

Trs Coral is the adults-only side of the Grand Palladium complex, so if your party includes kids, they'll stay at Grand Palladium next door. The gardens are beautiful, the beach is wide, and it's one of the best all-around resorts we work with in the Cancún area. We shoot ceremonies on the Beach Deck, with receptions either in the Poseidon Crystal Ballroom indoors or out on the Fizz Pool Terrace. TRS Coral and Grand Palladium together are also two of the best resorts in the area for large Hindu weddings — we've shot several here and the venues handle the scale beautifully.

Luxury adults-only with strong Hindu wedding infrastructure

Garza Blanca Cancun Resort

Garza Blanca sits between the Hotel Zone and Costa Mujeres. Tierra Luna is one of our favorite venues in the entire Cancún area — it works equally well for ceremony or reception — and the rooftop has direct views of Isla Mujeres. Elite Terrace gives you a ceremony with the beach as backdrop, and Sky Room is the indoor ballroom option. It's also a strong choice for Hindu weddings; we've shot several here.

Versatile, all-inclusive, great for large events

Bride and groom foreheads together on a palm-lined path at Finest Playa Mujeres, Cancún

Finest Playa Mujeres

We've shot a lot of weddings at Finest. The stone gazebo is the main ceremony area, though we also love ceremonies directly on the beach. For receptions, the options we come back to are Las Dunas Beach House, Grand Palapa, and Sky Bar Terrace.

beautiful resort with wonderful beach

Dreams Vista Cancún — best rooftop in the city

Dreams Vista sits in Puerto Juárez, the stretch of coast between the Hotel Zone and Costa Mujeres. The resort itself is a 17-story tower — tall enough that the rooftop infinity pool doubles as one of the most dramatic reception venues in the Cancún area. We've shot receptions up there and the 360-degree views of the Caribbean and city lights at sunset are hard to beat. For ceremonies, the Ocean Deck Palapa is built directly over the water — you're exchanging vows with the sea beneath you, not behind you.

Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres

Secrets Playa Blanca is the adults-only Secrets property in the Costa Mujeres corridor. It's a strong option for couples who want a polished, all-inclusive experience on one of the quietest stretches of beach in the area. We've photographed weddings here and the grounds are well-kept with clean sightlines for ceremony and portrait work. Full Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres venue guide.
